Thats a really nice article .... thanks...

I have always been curious with husband-wife teams that drive rigs and their families i.e. children ??
I mean for those that have children do they leave their children behind or do they take them with them on the trucks.

Just wondering ....

A few years ago I did a short stint as a security guard at a large residential RV park in Tucson, AZ. There were many, many people living there who were "trucker couples".

I started to be able to recognize the trucks as they would come home and pull up outside the park gates. The first thing I'd do was call their RV, as often only one half of the couple would be traveling, and it warmed my heart to see the left-at-home spouse rush out to welcome their other half home. One of my security co-workers was an ex-trucker herself and I know she worried a lot when her husband was out on the road (her first husband was also a trucker who was killed in a road accident).

I myself love driving, and had no trouble manoeuvring a 40' RV in tight spaces. But I could never even begin to contemplate handling an 18-wheeler!

Once again, Carrie, you come through with interesting stuff!

Neat Blog... Peter, I laughed about you leaving the Mrs. at the truck stop. I can see how that could happen very easily.

Thanks Peter Parkour -- I'm glad you like it! I was so excited about your entry (the Smokey and the Bandit obsession is 100% real) that I collected a few more "trucker tidbits" and linked them at the end of the post. Enjoy! (And then when you're done, answer my question about CB-talk...or do all you truckers have iPhones now?)

CWG: Rent the movie "Convoy" and watch it with Husbandito (which would be a really cool "handle" by the way) -- there's a steamy scene that takes place in the sleeper cab of Rubber Duck's truck right before the fight against the cops at Rafael's Silver Cloud Truck Stop. What could be more romantic than that?

SocialButterfly: I agree with you that it sounds like a great way to see the country and get paid for it! However, being hard core, I would have to let the spouse drive the 'blocker' Trans Am while I keep the hammer down and try to avoid Smokey Bear.

And incidentally, if you have ever wondered (like I have many times) if it is actually possible to make it from Atlanta, GA to Texarkana, TX and back in 28 hours...it is, and there is a memorial "Bandit Run" every year to commemorate the TransAm from the movie. The 2008 Bandit Runs starts May 13th...who's with me?

Here's a link for those interested:

Keep the comments coming folks. I may not be an expert on actual truck driving, but I do sure know my trucker songs and movies, and have lots more info for you if you're interested -- I just didn't want to take away anything from PP's awesome entry!
