Discontinued in 1901? I find it hard to imagine Queen Victoria had a ‘Groom of the Stool’ covering those particular job functions! I think Prince Albert might have been a little disturbed by that…

Perhaps in later years, the duties had changed?

jimsmuse says: Actually, the title was changed to ‘Groom of the Stole’ (and entailed responsibility for the royal robes instead of the royal rear) sometime in the 18th century, and was honorary from a time even earlier than that. As far as my research goes, there has not actually been an official buttwiper since Henry VIII’s reign. The title just became another honorary title bestowed upon a drinking buddy to give him an excuse to hang out at the palace.
