A great website for freelance interpreters is ww.rid.org
This website has interpreters that follow the professional code of conduct which is worth looking at and protects your daughter and her information and is a way to get quality interpreters.

With regard to Koko signing ASL, check out the book: Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees by Roger Fouts and Stephen Tukel Mills (Paperback - Sep 1, 1998), it is a scientific study of chimpanzee's and their ability to use ASL to communitcate... so I dont think it is an overstatement although an ape's language is not equal to a human adults, it is still language. It's fascinating!

Nice entry on how cool it is to be an interpreter!

I post various tidbits from my work as an ASL/English interpreter here n there along the way, including some thinking about theory and social structure and the ways language use happens and what it might mean .... well, I am in grad school, what can I say? :-)

The category on interpreting in my weblog may be of interest.

Meanwhile, I also felt compelled to comment on a certain unintentional stickiness with saying Koko actually uses ASL. Is it an exaggeration that matters? I don't honestly know, but it seems possible.

Hello Douglas Dunn,

Are you a free-lance interpreter and work in NYC?

We are adding to our interpretation database.

You may send you resume to mv@cpli.com

Any other ASL interpreter living in NYC may also send a resume.

Thanks,
Brian

A few years ago, I got the privilege of being able to tour the Florida School for the Blind and Deaf in St. Augustine. It was probably one of the most well-funded, high-tech, and beautiful education facilities I've ever seen.

I believe they still might do tours, during non-school hours, so if this posted got your interested I recommend checking it out.
